The Channel Tunnel. A Great Engineering.
The Channel Tunnel also known as “Chunnel” is an outstanding engineering achievement that connects United Kingdom and France. This tunnel allows both transportation of passengers and goods by train. That makes it one of the most significant projects in history. Let’s discuss it in details:
History:
The idea of creating this tunnel under ocean starts back in early 19th century but it was not started until 20th century. This idea faced many challenges which include political disagreement, lack of technology and concerns about environmental and financial problems. But in 1980s, with advance technology, plans were started again. In 1986, an agreement was signed between both countries and construction began in 1988.
Design and Structure:
The Channel Tunnel is a complex and consists of three tunnels:
- Two Rail Tunnel: These are main tunnels used for high speed passengers and trains. They run parallel to each other and about 7.6 meters in diameter. One tunnel is used for trains that travel to France and other is for traveling to UK. These tunnels are separated by a distance of about 30 meters.
- Service Tunnel: This is small tunnel with a diameter of 4.8 meters. It run in parallel to rail tunnels and used in emergency access, maintenance, and ventilation. It play a crucial role for safety, provides a safe passage for emergency evacuation.
Geology and Challenges:
The English Channel is the most challenging place for this because of complex geology. The tunnel passes through various layers of rock and soft clay and the water of ocean is also a major risk.
The design and construction team had to carefully study its ground condition including the type of soil, rock formation and the water table to determine the best tunneling method.
Construction process:
The construction process involves team from both UK and France sides. The two teams started their respective ends and both tunnlers worked toward each other. The journey through the tunnel takes about 35 minutes with train running at speed of 160 Km/h. The train like Eurostar can carry both passengers and vehicles.
